I’ve had the privilege of visiting so many remote spots across the island; places where life moves at a slower pace, and every encounter feels personal and genuine. These are places where everyone has time for a cup of tea and a yarn.
One of my favorite places to spend time on the Irish Loop is Ferryland. This beautiful historic village, with its weathered houses and timeworn docks, exudes a quiet dignity. I’ve often sat on a creaky old wooden bench outside a local diner, sipping a strong cup of coffee, while an elderly local shared stories of the old days when the sea was both a provider and a challenge. It’s in these moments, away from the usual tourist crowds, that you feel truly connected to Newfoundland’s soul.
Don’t miss Cape St. Mary’s, a small outport on the Irish Loop that exudes a timeless charm. Away from the hustle of St. John’s and the isolation of the outports, this area offers sweeping landscapes of rolling hills, patchwork farmlands, and dense forests that invite quiet reflection and adventurous exploration.
I’ve often found myself driving through Central Newfoundland with my favorite old playlist on, the scenery unfolding like a well-loved storybook. There’s something incredibly grounding about the vast open spaces here. I remember stopping by a small roadside farm where a friendly couple invited me to sample freshly churned butter and homemade jam—a simple gesture that made me feel like a cherished guest in their home.
Explore Grand Falls, where you can zipline across the mighty Exploits River—and let me tell you, it is a super cool experience. I loved it! Then there’s the whitewater rafting; this is a super immersive experience that will live with you long after you’re out of the boat. Grand Falls has nice hotels and even more rustic accommodations and is also known for annual foodie events and great restaurants.
Down the road is the town of Gander, known for its world-class global hospitality on 911. This is the town that welcomed the world into its heart! For a week, the people of Gander provided food, clothing, and shelter to stranded passengers as the world collectively held its breath. So legendary were these events that it spawned an award-winning Broadway musical. Check out the airport with its 50’s decor!

Engage with Locals: In central Newfoundland, the locals are some of the friendliest you’ll ever meet. A simple conversation can lead to unexpected discoveries and hidden spots that aren’t in any travel guide.
Western Newfoundland is a playground for nature lovers and adventurers. Dominated by the breathtaking expanse of Gros Morne National Park—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—this region is a testament to the raw, untamed beauty of Newfoundland. I’ve hiked the rugged trails, stood in awe of towering cliffs, and marveled at the sweeping fjords that define this dramatic landscape.
My Gros Morne Adventure:
I still remember the first time I set foot in Gros Morne. The sheer scale of these mountains, the intricate geological formations, and the vast, open spaces took my breath away. I spent days driving along winding roads, stopping to camp by remote lakes, and chatting with Indigenous elders who shared their wisdom and traditions. It was humbling. There’s a deep, almost spiritual connection to the land here that leaves a lasting impression on anyone fortunate enough to experience it.
