MY JOURNEY THROUGH EVERY REGION

Hey there, fellow adventurers! Donny Love here from the Adventures Unknown television series, and today I’m excited to take you on a personal journey through Newfoundland and Labrador. Over the past 10 years of filming, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to explore every nook and cranny of this rugged province—from the lively streets of St. John’s to the far-flung, remote outports where time seems to stand still. In this guide, I’ll share my adventures, experiences, and insights into what makes each region unique, along with plenty of practical tips and local secrets that only true locals know.

So buckle up, grab a warm cup of coffee (or perhaps a mug of Newfoundland screech), and join me as we explore the heart and soul of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Spirit of Newfoundland & Labrador

Newfoundland and Labrador isn’t just a place on the map—it’s an experience, a feeling, a state of mind. Every time I set foot on this island, I’m reminded of why I fell in love with it in the first place. From the friendly to the raw, unspoiled beauty that stretches as far as the eye can see, the province is a tapestry of vibrant stories and landscapes that constantly surprise and inspire me.

One of the things I love most about this land is how diverse it truly is. Whether I’m strolling through bustling urban streets or venturing into the remote wilderness, I always find a piece of Newfoundland’s soul waiting to be discovered. And trust me, there’s a story behind every rock, every wave, and every smile

St. John’s and the Avalon Peninsula: Our Urban Heartbeat.

This vibrant city is where history and modernity coexist in a way that’s uniquely Newfoundlander. I’ve spent countless mornings hiking the steep hills that overlook St. John’s harbor, watching the sun slowly rise over the North Atlantic as it bathes the city’s colorful row houses in a warm, golden glow.

Breathing in the crisp, salty air and feeling an overwhelming sense of possibility. The energy here is contagious, and every alleyway and café has its own story that it wants to whisper in your ear. I’ve shared laughs with locals over hearty breakfasts and listened to tales of maritime adventures that have been passed down through generations.

I often spent an entire afternoon in Quidi Vidi, a quaint neighborhood that feels like a small village within the city. The Quidi Vidi Brewery is a local favorite, or hit the Inne Of Olde for a traditional screech-in ceremony. Either way, you’ll find the warmth of the locals to be quite charming. I do love sitting in a cozy pub, listening as residents recount tales of great storms they weathered and bountiful codfish hauls—stories that make me appreciate the resilience and spirit of my people here.

Donny’s Tips for Your Visit:

  • Sunrise at Signal Hill: Arrive early for breathtaking views. It’s one of my favorite spots to reflect and capture the magic of a new day. This is a rite of passage for all St. John’s residents, and I can tell you that I have done it many, many  times!
  • Explore Water Street and Duckworth Street: These historic streets are brimming with local charm and vibrant street art. Make sure to find a little nook and sit and take it all in
  • Local Cuisine: Don’t miss out on trying a traditional fish and brewis or stopping by a local bakery for a taste of fresh, homemade toutons.
  • Take a Self-Guided Walking Tour: There are plenty of historic sites on the Avalon Peninsula. Stop by local museums and heritage centers to deepen your understanding.
  • Embrace the Local Lingo: Try using phrases like “Whadda ya at?” or “Yes B’y!”—locals love it when you do.
  • Plan for Changeable Weather: St. John’s is known for its unpredictable weather, so pack layers and be ready for anything from a sudden downpour to brilliant sunshine.

Eastern Newfoundland: Outports, Coastal Communities, and Timeless Traditions

The coastal communities in Eastern Newfoundland are living museums of maritime heritage. Each village has its own story, shaped by the relentless forces of the Atlantic and the resilient people who have made their lives by the sea. Outport Newfoundland is where you really get to feel traditional Newfoundland life. These small communities are steeped in history and cultural richness that tourism often overlook. I’ve had the privilege of visiting so many remote spots across the island; places where life moves at a slower pace, and every encounter feels personal and genuine. These are places where everyone has time for a cup of tea and a yarn.

One of my favorite places to spend time on the Irish Loop is Ferryland. This beautiful historic village, with its weathered houses and timeworn docks, exudes a quiet dignity. I’ve often sat on a creaky old wooden bench outside a local diner, sipping a strong cup of coffee, while an elderly local shared stories of the old days when the sea was both a provider and a challenge. It’s in these moments, away from the usual tourist crowds, that you feel truly connected to Newfoundland’s soul.

Don’t miss Cape St. Mary’s, a small outport on the Irish Loop that exudes a timeless charm. Walk along the harbor and experience the remnants of a bygone era in every weathered building and timeworn dock. Locals still practice age-old traditions, and you may be lucky enough to experience a community gathering where the sound of laughter and local music fills the air. It always reminds me that despite modern changes, the spirit of the sea and the traditions of maritime life endure.

What to Look For:

  • Locals: In places like Ferryland or Trepassey, don’t be surprised if you’re invited to join in on a meal or a community event. Embrace it—these are the moments that make travel unforgettable.
  • Historic Fishing Docks: Observe the weathered docks and boats that hint at a once-thriving fishing industry, a cornerstone of Newfoundland’s identity.
  • Local Festivals: Timing your visit during a local festival can offer a deeper dive into the traditions and communal spirit of these outports.

Donny’s Insights:

  • Respect the Pace: These communities often operate on their own timeline. Patience and respect go a long way.
  • Local Guides: Consider hiring a local guide who can share the nuanced history and traditions that aren’t written in any guidebook.

Document Your Journey: Whether through photos, sketches, or notes, capturing these authentic moments is a wonderful way to honor the local heritage.

Central Newfoundland: Rural Charm and Untamed Landscapes

Central Newfoundland is a region of contrasts—rural charm meets untamed natural beauty in a way that’s both calming and exhilarating. Away from the hustle of St. John’s and the isolation of the outports, this area offers sweeping landscapes of rolling hills, patchwork farmlands, and dense forests that invite quiet reflection and adventurous exploration.

I’ve often found myself driving through Central Newfoundland with my favorite old playlist on, the scenery unfolding like a well-loved storybook. There’s something incredibly grounding about the vast open spaces here. I remember stopping by a small roadside farm where a friendly couple invited me to sample freshly churned butter and homemade jam—a simple gesture that made me feel like a cherished guest in their home.

Explore Grand Falls, where you can zipline across the mighty Exploits River—and let me tell you, it is a super cool experience. I loved it!  Then there’s the whitewater rafting; this is a super immersive experience that will live with you long after you’re out of the boat. Grand Falls has nice hotels and even more rustic accommodations and is also known for annual foodie events and great restaurants.

Down the road is the town of Gander, known for its world-class global hospitality on 911. This is the town that welcomed the world into its heart! For a week, the people of Gander provided food, clothing, and shelter to stranded passengers as the world collectively held its breath. So legendary were these events that it spawned an award-winning Broadway musical. Check out the airport with its 50’s decor!

Highlights of Central Newfoundland:

  • Scenic Drives: The countryside here is perfect for long, leisurely drives. The unhurried pace and the endless vistas are a reminder to slow down and savor the journey.
  • Local Farms and Markets: Visit local farmers’ markets to experience the bounty of the land. Fresh produce, artisanal cheeses, and homemade baked goods are just a few of the delights waiting for you.
  • Hidden Trails: There are several lesser-known hiking trails that weave through forests and along rivers. These are perfect for a peaceful escape and some incredible nature photography.

Donny’s Tips for Exploring:

  • Pack a Picnic: With so many scenic spots, it’s worth packing a meal to enjoy outdoors.
  • Stay Flexible: The weather can be unpredictable, so having a flexible itinerary allows you to take advantage of clear skies or cozy up in a local café when a storm rolls in.

Engage with Locals: In central Newfoundland, the locals are some of the friendliest you’ll ever meet. A simple conversation can lead to unexpected discoveries and hidden spots that aren’t in any travel guide.

Western Newfoundland: Majestic Natural Wonders and Adventure.

Western Newfoundland is a playground for nature lovers and adventurers. Dominated by the breathtaking expanse of Gros Morne National Park—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—this region is a testament to the raw, untamed beauty of Newfoundland. I’ve hiked the rugged trails, stood in awe of towering cliffs, and marveled at the sweeping fjords that define this dramatic landscape.

My Gros Morne Adventure:
I still remember the first time I set foot in Gros Morne. The sheer scale of these mountains, the intricate geological formations, and the vast, open spaces took my breath away. One of my most unforgettable experiences was hiking along a narrow trail that led to a secluded viewpoint overlooking a fjord. The silence, punctuated only by the distant rush of waterfalls and the rustle of wind through ancient trees, felt almost sacred. In that moment, I understood why so many travelers—and locals—hold this place in such high regard.

What to Expect in Western Newfoundland:

  • Dramatic Geology: From the iconic Tablelands to the rugged coastal cliffs, every turn offers a new perspective on the power and beauty of nature.
  • Outdoor Adventures: This is the region for thrill-seekers. Whether you’re into rock climbing, kayaking, or simply hiking along trails less traveled, Western Newfoundland offers endless opportunities.
  • Cultural Layers: While nature dominates the landscape, the small communities sprinkled throughout this region carry deep historical significance. Local museums and heritage centers provide context for the geological wonders that surround you.

Practical Advice for Adventurers:

  • Plan Ahead: Gros Morne and its surroundings are vast, so plan your hikes and activities ahead of time.
  • Prepare for the Elements: The weather in Western Newfoundland can be extreme. Always pack extra layers, waterproof gear, and plenty of water.

Local Insight: If possible, chat with local guides who know the terrain intimately. Their insider knowledge can lead you to hidden trails and secret viewpoints that aren’t found in any guidebook.

Labrador: The Untamed Frontier

No journey through Newfoundland and Labrador would be complete without exploring Labrador—the untamed frontier where nature reigns supreme and the landscapes stretch out into infinity. Known as the Big Land, Labrador is a realm of vast boreal forests, tundra, and a rugged coastline that seems to echo with ancient stories. It’s a land that challenges you to embrace solitude and immerse yourself in its raw, untouched beauty.

My Labrador Experience:
I’ve shot several episodes of Adventures Unknown in Labrador, but I remember my first trip to Labrador like it was yesterday. The sense of isolation was palpable—vast, open skies and a horizon that seemed to go on forever. I spent days driving along winding roads, stopping to camp by remote lakes, and chatting with Indigenous elders who shared their wisdom and traditions. It was humbling. There’s a deep, almost spiritual connection to the land here that leaves a lasting impression on anyone fortunate enough to experience it.

Highlights of Labrador:

  • Pristine Wilderness: Labrador offers unparalleled opportunities for wilderness trekking, canoeing, and wildlife watching. The landscape is a canvas of untouched beauty. In winter it is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream: snowmobiling, skiing, and snowshoeing.
  • Cultural Richness: Labrador is home to a rich tapestry of Indigenous cultures. I was moved by the stories of the Innu people, whose deep connection to the land has shaped the region’s history and traditions.
  • Adventure Beyond the Map: In Labrador, the journey is as important as the destination. Every turn in the road unveils fresh discoveries, such as a concealed waterfall, a vast lake, or a solitary cabin that appears to be eternally preserved.

Donny’s Tips for Exploring Labrador:

  • Prepare for Isolation: Due to the remote location of Labrador, access to services may be limited. Make sure you have ample supplies, a well-maintained vehicle, and emergency contacts.
  • Embrace Local Culture: Take the time to learn about the Indigenous heritage of the region. Visit cultural centers and, if possible, participate in local events to truly appreciate the depth of Labrador’s history.

Respect the Environment: The natural beauty here is fragile. Practice leave-no-trace principles, respect wildlife, and always be mindful of local guidelines when exploring remote areas.

Conclusion: Embrace the Journey

As I wrap up this exploration of Newfoundland and Labrador’s regions, I’m reminded once again why I love this incredible province. Each region—whether it’s the bustling energy of St. John’s, the time-honored traditions of the outports in Eastern Newfoundland, the rural charm of the central areas, the awe-inspiring landscapes of the west, or the untamed frontier of Labrador—has its own unique story, its own heartbeat, and its own reason to be cherished.

Traveling through Newfoundland and Labrador is like piecing together a living mosaic. Every step, every conversation, and every breathtaking view adds another vibrant detail to the overall picture. For me, the real magic isn’t found on the famous tourist routes; it’s discovered when you stray from the map, when you take the time to talk with locals, and when you let the natural world reveal its secrets at its own pace.

My Parting Advice:

  • Stay Curious: Whether you’re a seasoned explorer or a first-time visitor, always keep your sense of wonder alive. Ask questions, delve deeper, and never hesitate to trust your intuition.
  • Be Present: Take time to soak in the beauty around you. Sometimes, the most profound moments happen in silence—a sunrise over a remote bay, a quiet conversation with a local elder, or the simple pleasure of a well-earned cup of coffee after a long hike.
  • Share Your Stories: I encourage you to document your journey, whether through photography, journaling, or simply sharing your experiences with friends and family. Every story adds to the rich tapestry of Newfoundland and Labrador.
